Every May 25th, Lebanon observes Liberation Day, a national holiday marking the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the country's south in 2000, after a 22-year occupation. This year, 2024, holds a special significance as the nation reflects on the struggles and triumphs of that period.
The day is also known as Resistance Day, honoring the fighters who played a crucial role in driving out the Israeli forces. Commemorations often involve speeches by government officials and veterans' groups, along with parades and wreath-laying ceremonies at memorials dedicated to those who fell in the fight for liberation.
But Liberation Day isn't just about the past. It's a day to recommit to the ongoing fight for a secure and sovereign Lebanon. This year, Culture Minister Abbas Mortada emphasized the importance of national unity and maintaining a strong military defense "in the face of an enemy convinced that it can only survive through destroying our Lebanese formula," referring to the country's delicate sectarian balance.
While the official public holiday status of Liberation Day varies from year to year, it's a significant day for most Lebanese. Many schools and businesses close, and some hold their own celebratory events. It's a day for families to come together, remember the sacrifices made, and celebrate the hard-won freedom.
Lebanon's path forward remains complex, with ongoing economic and political challenges. But Liberation Day serves as a powerful reminder of the country's resilience and its capacity to overcome adversity.
