Sierra Leone Independence Day: A Celebration of Freedom

Sierra Leone celebrates its Independence Day on April 27th each year. This is a national holiday that commemorates the country's declaration of independence from the United Kingdom on April 27, 1961.

The Road to Independence

The history of Sierra Leone is long and complex. The country was first colonized by the British in the 18th century. For over 150 years, Sierra Leone was a British colony. However, the people of Sierra Leone never gave up their hope for independence.

In the 20th century, there was a growing movement for independence in Sierra Leone. In 1951, the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) was founded. The SLPP was led by Milton Margai. Margai and the SLPP campaigned for self-governance.

In 1958, Sierra Leone was granted internal self-governance. This meant that the country had its own government, but it was still under the control of the United Kingdom.
